What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is mandatory for any individual or business looking to import or export goods and services from India. Without an IEC, customs clearance is impossible, and banks will not process international payments or remittances.
Step-by-Step Registration Process
The application process for IEC is fully online and can be completed through the DGFT portal:
- DGFT Portal Login: Go to the DGFT website and register as a "User" using your PAN and email ID.
- Create New Application: Select "Apply for IEC" and fill out the ANF-2A application form.
- Upload Documents: Provide your bank details, cancelled cheque, business registration document (GSTIN, Partnership deed, or Incorporation certificate), and PAN card.
- Pay Application Fee: Pay the non-refundable processing fee of ₹500 online using netbanking or debit/credit cards.
- IEC Issuance: Once verified, the DGFT system generates your digital e-IEC certificate, which you can download immediately.
Important Compliance Rule
While an IEC is valid for a lifetime, the DGFT requires exporters to update their IEC details annually between April and June. Even if there are no changes, you must log in to the portal and confirm your details. Failure to do so will result in your IEC being deactivated. Keep this on your annual compliance calendar to ensure your supply chain remains uninterrupted.
